"D" is not a logical reason for the characters to have a change of heart. They did not know that they would be rescued. They did realize that their situation was dire, and there was the very real possibility of death. They were trapped in a remote region inhabited with a large pack of timber wolves; if they could not save themselves, the chances of survival were virtually nonexistent.
