They continue a blood feud between their families, although they have no real idea how it started. They know it has to do with a claim to land, but it doesn't really seem wroth the viciousness with which they pursue each other.
Georg's insistence on hunting on Ulrich's land, & Ulrich's insistence on tracking him lead to their eventual end. They could have helped each other, or attempted to reconcile, but at the end they were each still calling for their men to rescue only them. They rail against each other as enemies, never realizing that the real enemy would turn out to be themselves, and the world which surrounded them.
