Why did Equiano' s name get changed to Gustavus Vassa?

I know he was named after a Scandinavian King, but what made it important?

Gustavus Vassa is a latanized version of Gustav Vasa who became King Gustav I of Sweden. Lt. Michael Pascal changed Equiano's name; however Equiano said he would rather be called Jacob, so he was placed in shackles till he accepted his name.
