Frank Bascombe, the narrator of The Sportswriter, is again the main character, this time several years after the conclusion of the earlier novel. Bascombe is no longer a sportswriter, but now works as a realtor in the New Jersey suburb of Haddam (modeled after Princeton, where Ford once taught), scene of the action in both novels. He still loves his ex-wife Ann who has remarried and carried their children away to Connecticut, and, unwilling to relinquish their past so easily, has purchased and moved into her old home.
