    It  is hard to tell from your question where your are in the book...  In general slave owners-cruel ones--expected their slaves to understand "that I was made for his use, made to obey his command in every thing; that I was nothing but a slave, whose will must and should surrender to his"  

    The statement appears in Chapter IV, after Linda relates that Aunt Martha believes slavery to be God's will. Linda and William, taught by their parents to view themselves as self-respecting human beings, do not agree with their grandmother's submissive, fatalistic attitude.
