The following research and activity ideas are intended to offer suggestions for complementing social studies and history curricula, to trigger additional ideas for enhancing learning, and to provide cross-disciplinary projects for library and classroom use.
Make a Map of Colonial America
Find or create a map of the United States (preferably one with the state borders and major rivers and mountains, but not much written detail). Using different colored pencils or crayons to distinguish between countries, color in the areas settled by England (the thirteen colonies), the Netherlands (New Netherland), France (Louisiana Territory and Illinois Country), Spain (Florida, New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, and California), and Russia (Alaska).
