In the end of the book 8, Trojans and Hektor are ready to start the attacks against the Greeks and after that, burn their ships, very next day. Homer characterized the atmosphere as being tense, Greeks being swept by panic (9.1-3, 13). In this part of the story, Thetis asked Zeus to show that Greeks need desperately Achilleus's involvement, and Zeus responsed at request by growing Trojans' strength(1508-510).
