    The statement is true.

    On the first page of Chapter 1, the narrator says, "...after we reached the segregated southern part of the journey, things must have looked up. Negro passengers...felt sorry for 'the poor little motherless darlings' and plied us with cold fried chicken and potato salad".  The author is referring to her comfort among her own people, describing two paragraphs later how the town of Stamps "closed in around us, as a real mother embraces a stranger's child".  The idea is developed further in Chapter 4, where the author says "segregation was so complete that most Black children didn't really...know what whites looked like".  From a Black child's point of view, being in "the Black area...where we were obliged by custom to stop and speak to every person we met", offered a sense of community and security.  When Black children ventured across the railroad tracks to the White area, "we were explorers walking without weapons into man-eathing animals' territory".
