The fraternity’s name was selected because those Greek letters represent a phrase meaning “friendship is essential to the soul.”
The Alpha chapter – at Howard – was organized on December 15, 1911 with a total of 14 charter members – the original 3 and 11 others whom they selected. The Faculty Council at Howard at first opposed the group’s plan to be a national fraternity, but two years later they withdrew their opposition. In February, 1914, the Beta chapter was chartered at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. The fraternity has continued to thrive in the meantime, and now boasts over 700 chapters worldwide.
The exact time of day when the fraternity was founded is not in the public record, although it was on a Friday evening.
