More seriously, the Great Depression so shattered the American economy, and so disabused people of their confidence that they knew how the world worked, that the American government tried many things to end the pain and jumpstart the economy. The WPA (Works Progress Administration) is a good example. It hired people to complete a range of public and artistic works. "Brain trusts" were assembled to come up with solutions. The Civilian Conservation Corps gave teens jobs, and so on.
