Readers familiar with McCarthy’s THE GROUP (1963) or her other novels and her collections of short stories will recognize in this memoir a central figure who might easily be included in her fiction. An orphan living with her Protestant grandparents, the Prestons, who were unimaginative but, within their scope, indulgent, she was early immersed in a world of books.
