The Esperanza family from "The House on Mango Street" originally came from Mexico.  This fact provides a lot of the interesting elements of the book as the family adjusts to life in a Chicago "chicano ghetto."  Ultimately, though, the misogynistic men, violent fathers, and unpleasant husbands found in the book are more indicative of life in poor, urban Chicago than of life in Mexico.  One of the book's major themes is Esparanza's desire to escape the "house" she is living in with the intention of finding a "home" somewhere devoid of the problems she found in her upbringing.
