    The House on Mango Street is a coming-of-age story. The author's purpose for writing the book is to give voice to a female in a male dominated culture (Hispanic Society). Esperanza is a bright young female that is attentive and talented in her use of words. In making the central character a female, Sandra Cisneros gives voice to the women who have commonly been kept silent due to societal constraints. She further illustrates how life is different for the Mexican- American female than it is for the Mexican- American male. The creation of Esperanza as the protagonist, allows Cisneros to offer a commentary on Hispanic society.
