With regard to family and friends, Esperenza finds two things frustrating in The House on Mango Street.

First is her command of the English language. Esperenza quickly realizes that knowing English is freedom. She sees her family members and friends in her poor neighborhood as prisoners in their homes because they can’t speak the language. Esperenza vows not to be a prisoner.

The second frustration for Esperenza is cultural. The clash between her Mexican heritage and American life are at times overwhelming. The biggest frustration is with her friends, who are reaching puberty at levels which sometimes make her feel uncomfortable.

Think of what life would be like for you if you had to move at a very young age to a foreign country where you didn't speak the language and didn't know anybody. What would be most frustrating for you?
