The rhyme in "Hips" seems to be a way for the girls to maintain their innocence and youth, while addressing their progression into becoming women. Unsure and unaware, they know that it is inevitable, however, creating rhymes and coming up with more imaginative suggestions helps the girls to reconcile their futures. Esperanza does not like Rachel's meaning, especially since it resmembles more of the reality she is used to especially observing the women of her neighborhood. Her interpretation of musical hips helps her separate herself from the role of women, at least for a while, in rhyme, song, and the joys of jumping rope.
