Darius is supposed to be stupid--retarded maybe by the nuns. But his view of God is that God is part of the natural world. The children have fun with his ideas and can share in them. He is also very creative. The kids don't feel shame, but instead feel a sense of play and being uplifted.
On the other hand, the nuns are viewing a manmade world and seeing everything that Esperanza and her cohorts are as shameful.
