Horace is noted for his poetry and the literary theory in Ars poetica.
Achievements
Horace is the premier Roman lyric poet. He invented what was to become a particularly
influential verse genre, the poetic autobiography. A transmitter and reshaper of early Greek poetry,
he turned an essentially minor form (compared with epic and tragedy) into a vehicle for incisive
and important political and philosophical statements, while retaining the melodic qualities of his
