Circumcision is a medical procedure that is undertaken usually in the first few days of a baby's life for religious, cosmetic, or medical reasons. It should also be noted that not all countries practice circumcision. At times, there are also adult circumcisions for various reasons.
The operation consists of taking off the foreskin of the penis. The doctor estimates the amount of foreskin that is to be removed. After local anaesthetics (usually some sort of cream) are used in both adults and babies, the cut is made. Also with babies there are various devices that can be used.
Recently, there have been a big debate of whether circumcision is not only necessary, but also harmful. In the past most babies in America were circumcised, but now less are being circumcised.
