In the story of The Silver Sword Edek was the oldest of three children.  He was the brother to Ruth and Bronia.  First their father was taken away.  Then one night the German Storm troopers come and take their mother.  Edek was enraged.  He was so angry that he shot at the van as it pulled out and may have injured one of the German soldiers.  Edek had to grow up fast, he took on the responsibilities of an adult to take care of his sisters.  He was always positive and upbeat around them so he wouldn't scare them.  He tried to make a normal life for them.

Edek had clearly assumed the role of "man of the house" after his father was captured. He felt it was his responsibility to protect his mother and sisters and he would not let the storm troopers (German soldiers) take his mother without his putting up a fight. This role of protector and provider is continued even after his mother is taken away. Notice that he is a sharp shooter as he manages to hit one of the soldiers in the arm. He is only 11yrs old then but there were many young boys who had joined the Boys' Brigade" and had learnt how to use a gun. Edek was one of those boys and this also tells that he was willing to fight for his country, even at the risk of putting himself in danger.

Edek is not the eldest of the three; Ruth is. She is two years older than he is.
