An ode denotes an elaborate lyric poem or hymn of praise which addresses an object, in this case the nightingale, in a sincere and dignified tone.

Throughout this ode the conflicting nature of human life is explored  i.e. the interconnection of pain / joy, intensity of feeling / numbness (lack of feeling), life / death, mortal / immortal,and the actual (real)/ideal
