There are a few reasons why there was the Cuban Missile Crisis in Cuba in 1962. In October, a spy plane from the US took pictures of nuclear missiles built on the island of Cuba by the Soviet Union. In the 1950's there was much worry and scare due to communism and the idea of a possible nulcear war using nuclear warfare particulary from Russia and the Soviet Union. As a result, the government took these photographs seriously. President Kennedy decided to place a naval blockade. The purpose of this blockade was to try and prevent the Soviet Union from building more missiles in Cuba. For the US not to invade Cuba, Nikita Khrushchev agreed to not build any more nuclear missiles in Cuba.
