Why was the orange-furred animal hurt when a rock fell on his head? Did the boy's horse die in the quicksand?

Even in animation I hate to see animals hurt or mistreated in any way. The furry animal I spoke of above was animatronic or computer generated. The horse was real. It was all acting. But I'd still like to know if the lost his horse to the quicksand.

 Thank you.

In the book, the Indian does lose his horse in the quicksand.  I am sure that is was mostly computer generated and that the horse was not harmed during the filming.
