The most probable answer is : The map denotes the "outside world" to the students in the slum. And that makes them realize their lowly and derelict condition. Therefore, if it were not for the map, they would never have realized the immensity of knowledge outside that they lack, and they wouldn't feel sorry for themselves, looking for ways to obtain money such as stealing. (This answer may not be right but is most probable.)
