Arabia enjoys a special status in Islam because the founder of the religion came from there.  Muslims believe that he received the word of God from an angel while in what is now Saudi Arabia.

In the late 500s CE, Muhammad was living in Mecca.  While there, he went into the mountains to meditate often.  At one point, Muslims believe, he was visited by the Angel Gabriel who started to tell him to "recite" the word of God.  From then, Muhammad started to record these revelations from God.  These became the Quran, the holy book of Islam.  Because Arabia was where Muhammad received his revelations, and because it was where he then started the Muslim faith, it has a special status in Islam.

The above answer does not mention the fact that Muhammad, the founder of Islam was born in Mecca. Muslims also believe that it was founded by the descendants of Ishmael, the son of Abraham through Isaac and the father of the Islamic people. Muhammad lived in Mecca and was a wealthy merchant there until he fled that city in 622, the year of the Hegira, when he fled to Medina where he died. The year of the Hegira is the year one in the Muslim calendar. Because of its association with Muhammad and Ishmael, Mecca is considered the holiest city in Islam; in fact when Muslims pray, they face Mecca. Mecca is also the location of the Kaaba, the holiest shrine in Islam. The pillars of Islam require all Muslims who can afford to do so to travel to Mecca at least once, a journey known as the hajj. While there, they normally march around the Kaaba and also engage in a ceremony known as "stoning the devil." Mecca is to Islam as Bethlehem is to Christians and Jerusalem to the Jews; it is the place where their religion was born and as such bears special significance to all followers of Islam.
