i believe it was because of symbolism. Everything Poe wrote had a very distinct purpose. He had Fortunato dressed in motley because it was carnival and Fortunato was in a fool's costume, representing the fact that he was indeed a fool. He went off and got drunk and his intoxication lead him eventually to his death. This is one heck of a story. i love it.
