In the book  "The Bridge to Terabithia" the first time the children decide to enter the woods area they call Terabithia, there is no bridge.  In order to get to the other side of the creek bed they have to figure out a method to cross the creek.  In the summer months the creek bed dries up but at Easter time the rain has been coming down very heavily and the creek is filled with water.

The best access across the creek is by means of a hanging rope which the children use to swing across.  However, the waters are rushing and beating against the sides of the creek's banks when they get to the creek.  The children were able to make it into their kingdom but the rain continues to come over the next days.  (Chapter 9)
