If you were going to argue that it is wrong (which I do not believe), you would have to argue based on the idea that animals should be treated as humanely as people.
There are only a couple of ways to attack animal testing in my opinion:
- If it is not necessary. But when it comes to testing for medical purposes I think that it is important and I do not think there is a good alternative.
- If it is always morally wrong. The only way to argue this is to say that animals are so important in their own right that we should not harm them for our own purposes. You would have to argue that the pain that is inflicted on the animals is so morally wrong that it negates the benefit that we people get from the testing.
Responses to this question will be varied based on individual beliefs and values. Personally, I do not think animal testing is wrong because many, many products are first tested on animals before humans consume or use the product. The underlying concern is for consumer safety. Animals are mammals and physiologically respond to different substances similar to humans. For example, the cosmetics industry uses animals. Further, many ingredients used in the manufacture of cosmetics are derived from animals. If you are a female and believe animal testing is wrong, then stop using makeup. If you are a male and hold the same belief, then tell your wife or girlfriend to do the same.
There are several different opinions related to this topic. Many people passionately believe that it is inhumane to experiment on animals. One of the reasons for this is because what is tested on animals is often not something that will be used to save lives. For example, makeups are sometimes tested on animals. Is it wrong to put eye makeup on an animal to see what it will do to its eyes? Many people will say that this kind of testing is wrong.
Many medicines are tested on animals as well. An argument here is that not all medications that are effective on animals will be effective on humans. In other words, this kind of animal testing is senseless.
I am on the fence with this topic. I am an avid animal lover but I see and am aware of the benefits of animal experimentation. Looking at it from a negative perspective you could say that the need to use animals it not necessary due to the advancements in technology and science. Many experiments can now be completed using computer software instead of animals. My biggest concern with animal use, is that they are not always used in human ways. Animals feel pain and, I believe, emotions. I would hate to treat anything that feels pain and has emotions in an inhumane way.
