Maya Lin, a graduate of Yale University, is best known for the Viet Nam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC. Her interest in building structures that fit into and are informed by their surroundings certainly must be influenced by the pioneering architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. One of his most well know home designs, Falling Water, is shown in the attached image. One can see how Wright strived to build something that enhanced, and fit into and worked with the natural surroundings. Creating a more earth friendly object, rather than one that is merely functional. Mr. Wright also designed the Guggenheim museum (see attached) which illustrates his interest in building in unconventional shapes.    With Asian culture as an influence Ms. Lin would be aware of the tradition of Feng Shui. This is a tradition in China that says that places have energy and the placement and even the colors of objects can create an emotional experience and draw on energies present in nature. If you read the article at Art21 at the attached URL you see Ms. Lin quoted about her influences on her work. I have attached a few images of these things.
