In Chapter Nine, "A View to a Death," Jack's abrupt departure has obviously divided the tribe. Simon, Piggy, Ralph, Samneric, and Bill still remain, but even the twins and Bill have ventured over to Jack's party and are later joined by Ralph and Piggy who only attend out of sheer hunger. Simon did not join Jack's tribe and of course, shows up late to the party at which point he is mistaken for the beast and killed. Later in chapter ten, only four of the older boys remain separate from Jack's tribe of hunters: Ralph, Piggy, Sam, and Eric. Ralph worries for their lack of numbers and how it will prove detrimental to their rescue:
"Four of us. We aren't enough to keep the fire burning" (158).
Ralph's foresight in the moment proves even more true when Jack and his minions steal Piggy's glasses at the end of the chapter. The theft will force the remaining four boys to confront the savages of Jack's tribe.
