When the story opens in Shakespeare's As You Like it, Duke Senior has been banished to the Forest of Arden and his brother, Duke Frederick, has seized control of his kingdom. Duke Senior has taken many members of his court with him out into the forest, but he has left behind his daughter Rosalind. Duke Frederick's daughter Celia is very fond of Rosalind and could not bear to be parted from her, so Rosalind stayed behind instead of going with her father. Frederick seems to be fine with this, but then he decides that Rosalind must be banished, too. Celia decides to go along with Rosalind. They disguise themselves as a shepherdess (Celia) and a boy (Rosalind) and set off into the forest to find Duke Senior.
