In spite of the very negative portrayal of a Catholic individual personified by Penny’s mother, Hairspray does implicitly support Catholic values (remaining virgins until marriage, prayer), and individuals who are not shown overtly engaging in Catholic religious practices or using sacramentals (Catholic items such as the rosary beads, etc.) do seem to manifest very Catholic-inspired sentiments in their narratives and conduct.
