There are 4 layers (5 on the palms, and soles of the feet) of the epidermis: confirmed layer, granular layer, spinous layer, and the basal/germinal layer.  Keratinized epithelial cells are found in the outer most layer of the epidermis, the confirmed layer.  These cells are composed of skin cells that have hardened and died and they serve to protect the underlying tissues and to prevent the transmission of substances into or out of the skin such as bacteria and viruses.  Over time these cells rub off our skin producing the dust we find in areas the humans inhabit.
