U.S. Attorneys do not generally resign as a result in change in administrations. The Attorney General is usually named by the new administration; however, most U.S. Attorneys maintain their positions and the positions are not ruled by a limitation of years of service. According to the Department of Justice website the U.S. Attorney is responsible for the following:
- the prosecution of criminal cases brought by the Federal Government;
- the prosecution and defense of civil cases in which the United States is a party; and
- the collection of debts owed the Federal Government which are administratively uncollectible
