Essentially all aspects of the war on terror (except for the idea that we do not want terrorist attacks to happen) have been controversial. A few of these aspects are:
- Impact on civil liberties. There are many people concerned about the amounts of power given to the government and what they see as the erosion of civil liberties in the name of fighting terror.
- Cost. The war on terror has helped cause us to be involved in Afghanistan for more than 10 years and Iraq for a little more than 8. These wars have been hugely costly in money and in lives. It is not clear to many people that the costs have been worth whatever benefits may have been gained.
- Impact on our relations with other countries. The war on terror has helped to cement in some areas of the world our reputation for being imperialistic and for opposing Islam. It has been very hard to craft a strategy for fighting terrorism that does not leave us open to such charges.
