The setting of the novel is in a small southern town called New Bern. The main action of the story starts on a Friday in August of 1944 and ends on Sunday. Flashbacks go back to the beginning of the summer.
The setting begins in Flint , Michigan where the family lives. It moves to Birmingham , Alabama when they go to visit their grandmother. The civil rights movement will affect both settings.
