On April 30, 1945, with Red Army troops closing in, Adolph Hitler committed suicide, together with his long-time lover and new wife Eva Braun. They chose to commit suicide together in the underground bunker from which Hitler and his high command had sought to continue to prosecute the war against the Russians from the east and the Americans and British from the west. Hitler had ordered that his remains be burned so that they would not fall into allied hands and be exploited for propaganda purposes.
Eva Braun killed herself by ingesting cyanide; Hitler shot himself.
