This article makes a good point when it says that we need to realize that Islam may be compatible with democracy but may be much less compatible with liberal democracy. Simple democracy is just rule of the majority. Liberal democracy is the rule of the majority but with protections for the rights of various minorities. From what we have seen in the Muslim world, there does seem to be a demand for democracy, but less demand for liberalism.
However, it is not clear to me that this makes much difference. It seems likely that Islamists who are democratic but not liberal might well be antagonistic to the US. This is still something that the US and the rest of the West needs to worry about to some degree.
