Personally, I liked it. Ortiz Cofer is able to make the reader understand the mindset of the colonizer as well as the colonized. Her use of metaphor is superb. For example, early on in the narrative, she writes, "“My mother had been the fourth child in a family of eight, and had spent most of her young life caring for babies that came one after the other until her mother had exiled her husband from bed” blends both the personal and the literary in a way that constantly keeps the reader engaged.
