The citizens of Oceania are both prevented and distracted from all forms of individual expression. Holding personal beliefs or opinions that contradict government policy is a "thought crime" punishable by imprisonment, torture, and brain washing. Personal goals and ambitions are overshadowed by class struggles and the neverending war with neighboring states.
