What were the most significant items in the survival kit? Why did Brian have mixed feelings about them?

In the book Hatchet by Gary Paulson, Brian finds himself stranded in the middle of nowhere with only himself and a few items to rely upon. One of the most significant of the items he has with him is the hatchet that his mother had given him as a present before he had embarked on the flight. He had rejected her attention at the time, but is now in need of the items that he has with him. Later in the story he remembers that there had been a survival kit on the plane.
Obtaining the survival pack had been tedious hard work that had worn Brian out, so when he finally had retrieved the bag he was too tired to open it. He was expecting treasures inside the bag that would help him to survive. He found a sleeping bag with a foam sleeping pad, two frying pans and four little pots, a fork, knife, spoon, dry matches inside a container, and two lighters. Inside the bag there was also a knife with a compass in the handle, a cap, a fishing kit, a first aid kit with antiseptic, scissors, and lures, hooks, and weights/sinkers. The reference page is found on page (172)
