Canterbury Tales is first of all Middle English poetry. It also combines several genres such as fable, romance, and biography. Because it is a conglomeration of tales, it is also a conglomeration of genres. The Knight's Tale for example is a romance while the Monk's tale is more of a clerical sermon.
