The Holy Roman Empire was an empire that existed mainly in Central Europe and was supposed to be an attempt to revive the old Roman Empire.
Charlemagne is usually given credit for starting the Empire. He built a large empire with Germany as its center. He felt that he was the heir to the emperors of Rome. However, his empire did not last very long as a true power in Europe. It did last in one form or another for almost 1,000 years after Charlemagne, but it was never a dominant power. By the end, it was a small collection of states, mostly in Germany, that had only a loose connection to one another.
