what was the effect of the norman conquest on the language of Britain?

The Norman conquest lead to French taking over as the language of the elite and educated for a period of time in Britain. There is a large injection of French terminology, especially relating to the wealthier classes. Hence, when you want to order the best cut of steak you order a "Filet Mignon" and not ground beef.
