There are many applications of chromatography. Industrial separations of protein based medicines are used to purify them. On a smaller scale, chromatography is used in analytical chemistry to analyze mixtures of molecules. Another is to assay the active ingredient in medicines. Chromatography is widely used in the sciences.Chromatography is the collective name for a series of laboratory techniques used to separate mixtures by passing them dissolved in a so-called mobile phase through a phase known as the stationary phase.
The analyte, the compound to be measured away from other molecules contained within the mixture, is thus separated, allowing it to be measured according to differential partitioning between stationary and mobile phases.
Chromatography can be either preparative or analytical. Preparative chromatography is used to separate a mixture's components to make them available for further use. It is therefore a type of purification process.
