In Neimann-Paul disease there is an absence of the enzyme acid sphingomyelinase or ASM in a person's body. Due to this, the person cannot break down a fatty substance called sphingomyelin, that is present in every cell of the human body.

As a result of this the fatty acid builds up inside the cell leading to an eventual death of the cell. The organs most affected by the disease are the spleen, liver, and brain.

No cure for this disease has been identified till now. There are 4 types of the Neimann-Paul disease. Patients with Types A and D cannot find relief in any way. For Type B, many studies are going on with bone marrow transplants and enzyme replacement with a form of gene therapy showing the most potential. A treatment called miglustat for patients with Type C is being experimented with

All patients are advised to take a low-cholesterol diet and drugs that can lower cholesterol can relieve a few of the symptoms of the illness.

In neimann-paul disease the persons body is insufficient in the enzyme acid which is usually reffered to as  ASM or sphingomyelinase .as a result the organ liver in a persons body stops dissolving the fatty substanc called sphingomyelin that is present in every cell.there is still no cure found for this diseaseby the researchers, but the people affected by this disease are advised to control the cholesterol.
