When working with an ethnically diverse population, a community health nurse must understand health disparities that exist among different populations. By understanding these disparities, a community health nurse may address health issues associated with socioeconomic status, quality of care issues, and lack of research related to particular ethnic populations.
Individuals who are members of racial and ethnic minorities are more likely to be in the category of the working poor and to live in lower economic environments. They also tend to not receive the same quality of care as other patients. This may be due to language, cultural or lack of knowledge about the particular group by the care provider. A community health nurse would also have to understand that there is limited research specifically addressing the care needs of particular racial and ethnic populations.
