The handle of a toothbrush are normally made of plastic and the brushes are normally made of synthetic fibers. Presently the synthetic fibers used in most of the toothbrushes are made of nylon. Electric toothbrushes are also popular nowadays, especially in Western countries. In an electric toothbrush there can be a rechargeable battery section or a place for replaceable dry cell batteries. Rechargeable toothbrushes come with a rechargeable unit. The design of brush section varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. The most popular electric / rechargeable toothbrushes consist a round brush section which spins when the appropriate switch is pressed.

The first toothbrush is believed to be invented in China in 1223. A Japanese master said that he had seen some monks cleaning their teeth with a brush when he was in China. The brush was made of horse hair tied on the end of a stick made of ox bone. How ever in 3000 BC, Ancient civilizations used a thin twig with a frayed end called a "chew stick." These twigs cleaned teeth with a rubbing action. Now manual tooth brushes are made up of plastic and synthetic fibers that are made of nylon. The first electric toothbrush was invented in Switzerland, 1954. Electric toothbrushes were originally created for patients with limited motor skills, as well as orthodontic patients.
