One theme that is in Cowan's "The Red-Backed Spiders" and that runs through his other short stories like "The Island" is that of the dark sided anti-hero who presence adds a malevolent sub-plot and introduces violence and selfishness. Cowan allows these themes open consideration of their undesirability, their power and their effects on others' lives.
