One important theme in the story concerns identity, how Hazel develops it with certainty and strength while at the same time being caring and loving to Raymond. She both believes in herself, which is absolutely necessary to constructing a strong identity, yet, not at all selfish, she is always ready to defend Raymond. However, she grows in the story, which we see especially when she recognizes that Raymond is an athlete in his own right. Thus she sees herself as an individual but also understands herself in relation to others, and it is upon both of these that she bases her sense of who she is.
