One theme is certainly miracles, as the title denotes. One of the miracles is Father Moriarty's glass of water. His muscles have atrophied to a pitiable state so that he cannot even lift a pitcher and pour a glass of water for himself. While he is chafed by doubts about the existence of God, he is also chafed by a growing thirst.

Thinking with sincere compassion about Rose, whose daughter Mandy is (he still believes) dangerously ill has brought him to the point of wanting to pray again though not knowing to whom. Contemplating the water for which he thirsts (part of another theme about New Testament "Living Water"), he closes his eyes and sees there a vision of green-blue color, like the ocean that roars alongside them. From the green-blue water he envisions, a girl emerges with laughing eyes and voice, "full of life and she will never die."

She is a vision but she is full of life and she will never die.

Father Moriarty opens his eyes, reaches with a steady, strong arm over to the pitcher and pours himself one and a half glasses of water and drinks them "straight down." He has had his miracle. He closes his eyes. Not much later, he will prove one side of the resurrection question,--the side he saw in his vision of spiritual resurrection--(resurrection: another theme) while Mandy will illustrate the other side of it--return to life from death--as she regains a pulse and body warmth and a heartbeat after an overdose.

He opens his eyes and sees the pitcher of water. He reaches out, and his hand is steady, he pours water into the glass until it is full. He drinks the water straight down in one long draft.

Rose straightens up and looks into Mandy's face .... There is a flush to that cheek.... mandy's eyes fluttered open.
